Training

It is my belief that training should always be fun for the dog, never a chore. It should be kept interesting, challenging, with lots of excitement and praise. If your not feeling too exciting or exuberant that day, don't train, or do something rather simple with your dog.

For patrol dogs, narcotics dogs and bomb dogs, or any other dog being used for law enforcement, keep training records from day 1. Document everything you do with your dog, this is what certifies your dog. Like you, if your an officer, your dog went to school, took a number of tests, all records were kept, he graduated and is now working the streets. Whom ever you get your dog from, make sure he comes with training records.

As the handler you should work with the trainer and dog for said period of time agreed upon before going to the streets. But don't stop there, also you should join a recognized organization like the U.S.P.C.A. [United States Police Canine Association} and enter your dog in their trials. This also helps with certification.

Don't be afraid to put your dog through refresher training every 6-8 weeks. This is very necessary It keeps him sharp and it's fun for the dog. I'm a strong believer in going back to basics. If your dog starts getting a little sloppy with say his out command, go back to basics, if he's not tracking like he should be, go back to basics. You don't have to run 5 mile tracks every time, try a half mile with one turn, it's over and play begins.

Of course there is a lot more to training than this, but you get the idea. It takes time, patience, and hard work.
