From 1981 to 1985 I
worked with Gerry Lapham Founder/owner of Sentinel K-9 in
Fayetteville, North Carolina. During my time there we trained
approximately 125 dogs, all of which were trained for narcotics
detection. Some dogs were trained as patrol dogs that we also
trained for narcotics as requested by the police Department
ordering the dog.
One dog I am especially proud of is "Tally", a beautiful golden
retriever female, better known as "The Lady That Guards the
Lady". Tally was trained to detect explosives. It was fun taking
her to the mall. I would ask some of the shop owners there if I
could use their shop to hide training aids. Of course this was
after I explained to them that Tally's job was going to be to
guard the "Statue of Liberty". The response was wonderful. I
would let the shop owner hide the training aids and then I would
go in with Tally. They were amazed at how fast she could find
it, especially since one owner had a flower shop. Imagine all
the different odors in a flower shop yet she did her job and
found the aids without a problem. I selected her for the job and
Gerry and I trained her. Tally was then donated to the rangers
that work on Liberty Island. She also worked for the city of New
York. |

I also have experience working with Blood Hounds. The late Col.
Nick Rowe of the US Army Special Forces in Fort Bragg, North
Carolina, developed an escape and evasion course that included
the use of trailing dogs. After about 3 to 4 days of these
soldiers being in the woods, with very little rations, I would
run a trail about 7 to 10 miles long with a blood hound named
"Jake". Jake was my favorite because he was at least 100 pounds
and he would just push his way through all the brush and swampy
areas. What an adventure and loads of fun. I always caught
someone.
I've instructed and attended numerous seminars thorough out the
U.S. and also testified in Court on behalf of a drug dog that I
trained named "Buck". I went to Europe (Germany, France, and
Holland) to study their techniques on training dogs. I kept what
I liked and discounted the rest. While there I got to observe
the KNPV trials and also the French Ring sport.
I went on my own for a couple of years. At which time I selected
J.D., a yellow lab that I trained for narcotics detection. After
training he went to Bastrop, La., where he built an excellent
reputation in narcotics detection. If there were drugs anywhere
he would find them.
Then there was "Kassan", a wonderfully vibrant Belguin Malinois
that I trained in all phases of Police Patrol. Kassan was
trained in tracking, area searches, evidence searches, building
searches, obedience, agility, officer protection, and at the
request of the department narcotics detection was added. After
training Kassan went to work in Houma, La., where he built
himself an excellent reputation.
In the late 80's I went through major burnout and decided to
leave the dog training industry for awhile. I went on to do
other things but my passion for dogs and the incredible things
they can do never really left me. I decided to start my own
business, K-9 Selection. I know I am very qualified to select
the right dog for the job.
Selecting the right dog can make the difference in whether you
find the suspect, explosives or narcotics or walk away with the
trophy.
Tell me what your looking for, and I 'll find the right dog for
you.
Also I am always looking for good working dogs (sporting and
herding groups). If your a breeder or someone who has a nice
retriever and for some reason you can't keep him or her please
feel free to email or call me. Dogs must be well socialized,
between the ages of 14 months to 3 years, good hips and elbows,
and dogs spayed or neutered are o.k.
Thank you for your interest in K-9 Selection
